CocoMaya Restaurant and Bar, Virgin Gorda

Toasting the evening at CocoMaya, a beautiful restaurant and bar in Virgin Gorda…

Although we love re-visiting some of our favorite places in the islands, we also love to find and experience new ones – and then share them with you!

We’d read just a little bit about a new restaurant/bar on Virgin Gorda and during our last BVI visit, we were able to stop and experience CocoMaya.

Established in 2011 and not far from Spanish Town, we found CocoMayato be a real treat. We were able to spend one evening there and enjoyed relaxing in the outdoor lounge with our toes in the sand around the fire pit.

Wonderful aromas were wafting from the dining area and if we didn’t already have dinner planned upon our return to the boat, we would have enjoyed one of their menu offerings in the open air dining room with a beautiful view of the beach and sunset.

Although we certainly didn’t mind just spending time on a lounge chair for two on the beach with a soft tropical breeze and the warmth of the fire on our toes…

Cow Wreck Beach Bar, Anegada

On the west end of the beautiful island of Anegada in the British Virgin Islands lies a stunning expanse of brilliant white sand beach and a bar, both with the unusual name of Cow Wreck.

copyright Rum Therapy
According to the Cow Wreck Beach Resort website,  this stunning white sand beach was named Cow Wreck after a ship filled with cow bones (used to make buttons and other things in the 19th century) wrecked off of the northwest coast of Anegada. Cow bones drifted ashore for many years afterwards, thus the name Cow Wreck Beach.

There’s plenty of room to relax with one of their signature drinks, Cow Killer or Wreck Punch at the bar and the word is they have excellent conch fritters. As fresh as you can get them, no doubt, given the number of conch shells used in the surrounding landscaping.

Sandy Spit, British Virgin Islands

Update: Sandy Spit survived the hurricanes of 2017, but lost the little vegetation it had to begin with! Local residents have been planting a few small trees that we hope will eventually take and re-vegetate Sandy Spit. Here’s a photo of a recent visit (post Irma).

I don’t know what it is about small, uninhabited tropical islands that gets us all excited. Maybe we watched a few too many episodes of Gilligan’s Island, or maybe it’s just the allure of complete, peace, quiet and solitude…

Sandy-Spit-1---O
Whatever it is, our first visit in 2010 to Sandy Spit in the British Virgin Islands ranked right up there with visits to other favorite uninhabited tropical island such as Mopion and Petit Tabac in the Grenadines and Sandy Island, Carriacou. We had Sandy Spit all to ourselves for a few wonderful hours and spent the time wandering around, lounging in the sun, enjoying a wee bit of rum punch and enjoying the sound of the gentle waves lapping the shore.

View of Jost Van Dyke from Sandy Spit
Sandy-Spit-2---O
It can take all of 10 minutes to walk around Sandy Spit – if you walk slowly! From Sandy Spit, it’s just a short distance to Green Cay, and on calm days this area can be a great place to snorkel. There are some great diving areas around Green Cay as well.

Sandy-Spit-15---O
Green Cay as seen from Sandy Spit

Sandy Spit is rumored to have gotten it’s name because it’s just “spitting distance” from Jost Van Dyke. It’s also quite close to it’s slightly larger sister island, Sandy Cay and many people try to spend time at both while in the area.

View from Sandy Spit, British Virgin Islands

The island is sand all the way around with just a bit of foliage in the middle. To the east you can see Tortola, and to the west you can see Little Jost Van Dyke and Jost Van Dyke.

Sandy-Spit-8---O
Tortola on the east

The first time we visited Sandy Spit, we arrived via a cat during a week-long sail in the BVI. The second time, we rented a dinghy in Great Harbour, Jost Van Dyke. Just a word of advice – if taking a dinghy over, be sure to check weather conditions before embarking on the journey. When there is a strong north swell, it can be difficult – if not dangerous to beach your dinghy on Sandy Spit. We know this now…

Sandy-Spit-7---O
On calm days, the snorkeling is excellent and the surf is calm and great for swimming, floating and pure relaxation.

Ahhh…Sandy Spit. A Gilligan-esque slice of paradise!

Sandy Cay, British Virgin Islands

Between Tortola and Jost Van Dyke in the British Virgin Islands there’s a small uninhabited island called Sandy Cay.

copyright Rum Therapy
Sandy Cay is quite small, yet larger than it’s also uninhabited sister island to the north, Sandy Spit. Both islands have become popular with the many people who love to sail the BVI and with excursions from neighboring islands, yet are so very fun to visit and you might still find yourself enjoying the island by yourself, depending on the time of year you visit.

copyright Rum Therapy
What we liked most, well there’s really nothing we didn’t like…but the island has an amazingly beautiful beach that wraps around nearly half of it, gorgeous blue water and great views of neighboring islands.

copyright Rum Therapy
We’ve visited Sandy Cay a couple of times and during one of our visits we took the path that cuts through the center of the island. We left from the beautiful, warm, sandy beach on the south side and worked our way through what felt like a jungle.

copyright Rum Therapy
On the path we saw a multitudes of crabs scurrying around as well as lush green foliage.

copyright Rum Therapy
Sandy-Cay-5-O
View of Tortola from Sandy Cay

The path began to open up after a few minutes and we could see just how different this side of the small island was from the other. Instead of palm trees, there was cactus and the shoreline on this side was very rocky and rough.

Instead of palm trees, we saw cactus, and the shoreline on this side, although still beautiful, was very rocky and rough.

copyright Rum Therapy
From our vantage point on this side of Sandy Cay, we could see Sandy Spit’s white sliver of sand in front of Green Cay with Little Jost to the left.

copyright Rum Therapy
After spending a few moments checking out the phenomenal view, we headed back to the south side to spend some time on the white sand beach and play in the crystal clear blue water…

Little Deadman’s Beach, Peter Island

Little Deadman’s Beach, an extension of Deadman’s Beach on Peter Island in the British Virgin Islands, is a beautiful expanse of soft, light colored sand, excellent for sunbathing, snorkeling or just totally relaxing…

copyright Rum Therapy
Rumored to have gotten its name for the pirates marooned on neighboring Dead Chest Island who drowned while attempting to swim to Peter Island and washed up on shore, Deadman’s Bay is gorgeous and well worth a visit!

Accessible only by boat, Little Deadman’s Beach offers beautiful views of Deadman’s Beach, Peter Island Resort and Tortola.

The protected bay is great for swimming, kayaking, walking the beach or just floating in the turquoise waters…

copyright Rum Therapy
Walk over to the stunning Deadman’s Bay Beach, where although the beach chairs and other amenities are for use by the Peter Island Resort guests, day visitors can order lunch or beverages from Deadman’s Beach Bar & Grill.

And, if you’re looking for a little “alone” time, just head over to Honeymoon Beach right next to Little Deadman’s Beach, where you’ll find just one thatched palapa with two lounge chairs.

The Limin’ House, Tortola

Update from our original post

Several years ago we had the opportunity to stay at a beautiful villa named the Limin’ House on a hill overlooking Soper’s Hole in Tortola in the British Virgin Islands. Unfortunately Tortola was hit hard by the hurricanes of 2017 and the Limin’ House was not spared. During our recent visit to Tortola, we had the chance to stop by the Limin’ House to get a tour of the remodeled villa and talk to owner Susan McDavit. The Limin’ House is looking great again and ready for your next stay on Tortola!

Here’s how it looks now. Who’s ready to go?

White Bay, Jost Van Dyke

There are a few beaches that we’ve come across in our travels that simply take our breath away and White Bay, Jost Van Dyke in the British Virgin Islands is definitely one of them.

copyright Rum Therapy
With powder soft white sand and turquoise blue, clear water set off by lush foliage, it is truly a tropical paradise.

copyright Rum Therapy
In addition to its incredible beauty, White Bay is home to some of the best beach bars around, such as One Love Bar & Grill, Gertrude’s, Soggy Dollar, and Ivan’s Stress Free Bar. (See more about Jost Van Dyke Beach Bars here: Bar Hopping On Jost Van Dyke)

Separated in the middle by a rocky outcropping, it’s well worth the hike to go from one end to the other checking out the people, the scenery and ALL of the bars! (be sure to wear shoes or sandals when crossing the outcropping. There is a cement stairway over the top of it, but there are some sharp rocks to navigate on Ivan’s side)

copyright Rum Therapy

copyright Rum Therapy

Getting there: Get to White Bay via boat, taxi over from Great Harbour, or rent a jeep from Great Harbour (the adventurous, non-inebriated, very fit or frugal individuals can walk over the hill from Great Harbour. We hiked it once…)

Beach: beautiful white sand with gradual access. Great for swimming in the quieter areas (watch for boats – White Bay can get very busy with boats, especially in the afternoon), snorkel by the rocks on the east end.

copyright Rum Therapy
Recommended for: well, anyone that loves a beautiful beach…

copyright Rum Therapy
Tip: because of the popularity of the beach bars on White Bay (especially Soggy Dollar), it can get very busy in the afternoon. If you like a party, you’ll love to be there at the busy time. If you’d rather experience White Bay when it’s quieter, consider visiting in the early morning, or later in the evening when the day crowds have gone home. Here are a just a few pictures taken during some of the quieter moments…

Hog Heaven, Virgin Gorda

There are bars with a view and then there are bars with a VIEW! Hog Heaven is a Bar & Grill sitting high atop Virgin Gorda with an absolutely beautiful view of the entire North Sound.

From your perch in the sky, you can see Leverick Bay, Bitter End Yacht Club, Saba Rock Resort, Necker Island and The Sandbox on Prickly Pear Island.
On clear days, you can even make out a faint strip of Anegada in the distance.

Hog Heaven is a small, unassuming  building on top of the hill on Nail Bay Road overlooking North Sound. It’s owned by Blondie, who apparently is also a pig farmer/ship captain on Virgin Gorda.

One of the rum drinks on the menu was a Blondie Special and we ordered that and a rum punch and took a seat to drink in the view.

Hog Heaven is known for its BBQ, so we decided to order a plate, as well as a bowl of Conch Chowder. Both were delicious and very reasonably priced.
