Bushwacker Pudding Shots

You can’t beat the taste of a frosty Bushwacker, especially from the top of Paradise Point in St. Thomas, or on beautiful White Bay, Jost Van Dyke at Ivan’s Stress Free Bar, but this little, easy to make delight sure comes close. They may be small, but they still have a pretty high alcohol content, so enjoy your pudding responsibly!

National Rum Day

Today is National Rum Day. Rum. That’s right, Rum has it’s own day.

Finding the Rhum on St. Barths

When we started the company Rum Therapy in 2010, we knew little more about rum than it was an ingredient in some of our favorite island cocktails; piña coladas, rum punch and painkillers, oh and bushwackers – can’t forget bushwackers… And that rum appeared in the lyrics of many Kenny Chesney and Jimmy Buffett songs. And that wherever you go in the islands, there’s rum.
That’s it.

See our list (and recipes!) of the 10 Best Tropical Rum Drinks

Since then, we’ve learned a lot more. I mean, when you start with virtually no knowledge of a subject, you’ve got a ways to go. We’re not experts by any means, like our friend Dave Russell of Rum Gallery, but we’ve learned more about how rum is distilled and different types of rum and what rums are good for sipping or mixing in cocktails and although it’s not our goal to become rum experts, we’re certainly up for the challenge of learning more about this spirit with a long and storied history.

So, we’ll continue to do the research (best done in the islands on beautiful beach or at a great beach bar or on a boat, don’t you think?) with the hope of continuing to provide the best rum experiences possible (cocktail recipes, best beach bars, best locations to sip tropical libations, distillery tours, etc., etc., etc.)

In the meantime, be sure to check out the plethora of rum recipes available on our website either by category or by picture (prepare to drool just a little):

So today, let’s lift our glasses (of rum) to Rum.
Cheers Rum!

Calmos Café, St. Martin

Whether you just want to relax on the beach with your toes in the sand while sipping on your favorite beverage or to enjoy some tapas while watching the sun set over the bay, Calmos Cafe has you covered.

Calmos-Cafe7(a)-(600)-O
Located right on the beach on the French side in Grand Case, St. Martin, Calmos Cafe serves everything from fine wines to tropical rum concoctions and tasty fresh, local food to go with it.

Calmos-Cafe2(a).(600)-O
We enjoyed some tapas along with a frozen rum drink called the Calmos (with peach and mango) and a Rhum Runner, all of which were excellent, but even more so as we enjoyed them while sitting just inches from the water while watching the sun set…

Calmos-Cafe12(a)-(600)-O
The atmosphere is warm and quiet most nights, but if you’re looking for more excitement, plan to visit on the nights they have a live salsa or reggae band.

We got there early one evening and it was relatively uncrowded, but as the evening wore on, more and more people arrived snapping up all the tables and seats by the shoreline.

And why not. With good food and drinks and a view like this…

Hog Heaven, Virgin Gorda

There are bars with a view and then there are bars with a VIEW! Hog Heaven is a Bar & Grill sitting high atop Virgin Gorda with an absolutely beautiful view of the entire North Sound.

Hog Heaven 3
From your perch in the sky, you can see Leverick Bay, Bitter End Yacht Club, Saba Rock Resort, Necker Island and The Sandbox on Prickly Pear Island.
On clear days, you can even make out a faint strip of Anegada in the distance.

Hog Heaven 4Necker Island in the distance

Hog Heaven is a small, unassuming  building on top of the hill on Nail Bay Road overlooking North Sound. It’s owned by Blondie, who apparently is also a pig farmer/ship captain on Virgin Gorda.

Hog Heaven 1
One of the rum drinks on the menu was a Blondie Special and we ordered that and a rum punch and took a seat to drink in the view.

Hog Heaven is known for its BBQ, so we decided to order a p

Light & Minty Cran Rum

Like the taste of tart and tangy cranberry? If so, you might enjoy the taste of this easy, light and refreshing cocktail. No sugar added to this one, so it’s not an overly sweet combination. I love the addition of the mint which adds a bit of freshness to the mix.

If you like your cranberry a little sweeter, you might try our Cranberry Mojito recipe which adds a little brown sugar to tame the tang just a bit. Or, add just a splash of a lemon lime soda!

Cran-Rum2-(600)-O
Light & Minty Cran Rum
(makes one)

1.5 oz. light rum
4 oz. cranberry juice cocktail
4-5 small mint leaves

Gently bruise the mint leaves. Pour the rum and cranberry juice cocktail over ice in a small glass. Add bruised mint leaves, lightly stir.

Jingle Bell Rum Cocktail

Ho, ho, ho – another holiday drink made with rum. We found a Christmas cocktail recipe called Jingle Bells and thought we’d give it a try. It asked for 1/2 oz Blue Curacao liqueur and as we blended it together, we thought, wait! Blue? So – we traded the Blue Curacao for grenadine, and added more rum (the original called for .5 oz.) and got this festive looking and tasty cocktail. Enjoy and Happy Holidays!
Jingle Bell Rum Cocktail
(makes 1)

2 oz. light rum
2 oz. pineapple juice
.5 oz. grenadine
.5 oz. cream of coconut
1 c. ice

Blend until frothy, pour into glass, garnish with cherry.

Pumpkin Spiced Rum Cocktail

We loved the taste of the Pumpkin and Spiced Rum Cupcakes so much that we thought we’d explore the taste combination in a cocktail. We tried a few with less then stellar results but after one sip of this one, we knew we had a winner! The rich, creamy, pumkiny taste makes it a perfect desert drink and will certainly put you in the holiday spirit! Happy Thanksgiving!

Zesty Orange Mojito

We’re always on the look out for tasty new mojito recipes and ran across this one recently. The orange mixes very nicely with the lime and mint. A delicious taste of tropical citrus goodness –  good even in the winter when oranges are in high season. Almost like a little sunshine in your glass.

Zesty Orange Mojito
(makes 1)

1/2 orange cut into wedges
1/2 lime cut into wedges
2 teaspoons sugar
8 leaves fresh mint
2.5 ounces white rum
1 cup crushed ice

Put the oranges, limes, sugar, and mint in a tall glass. Muddle the leaves, orange wedges and lime wedges until juicy and fragrant. Add rum and ice. Shake vigorously, strain over ice in a smaller glass.  Garnish with mint and a slice of orange.
