Sint Maarten Yacht Club Bar & Restaurant

Several years ago while sailing out of Simpson Bay lagoon through the Simpson Bay Drawbridge, we saw what seemed to be a bar/grill with an excellent deck overlooking the bay and the bridge.

It looked like a great place to enjoy a beverage while watching the boats and yachts, so we decided on a return trip to St. Maarten/St. Martin, to check it out.

Located right at the base of the drawbridge, Sint Maarten Yacht Club Bar and Restaurant can be accessed by car (limited parking next to the building), by dinghy (tie up on their dock) or by walking if staying in the area.

They have indoor/outdoor seating and we ordered a few brews on special for happy hour then grabbed a few chairs on the deck overlooking the bridge and lagoon.

As it got closer to the time that the drawbridge was set to open, the deck really filled up with patrons. While enjoying the view and the beverages, we made a few new friends from North Carolina (note the Rum Bum Cap!)

We really enjoyed watching the huge yachts make their way back to the lagoon before sunset.

Great view, good cold drinks and good conversation with fellow boaters and travelers – not a bad place to spend an evening!

Frozen Berry Mojito

Nothing can beat the taste of a well made Classic Mojito, but during our recent trip to St. Maarten, we enjoyed a Wild Berry Mojito at Mary’s Boon that was totally different and really, really good! Turns out the bartender at Mary’s Boon won an award for the beverage but wouldn’t divulge the complete recipe. It was berrylicious and we could certainly taste a bit of lime and mint, but it was frozen – more like a daiquiri. When we returned home, we thought we would try to capture the flavors present in that scrumptious Wild Berry Mojito.

We tweaked some ingredients to our liking and ended up with the following recipe, and although not quite as amazing as the one we had in St. Maarten, it’s pretty tasty! Perhaps the incredible view of Simpson Bay at Mary’s Boon had something to do with it?

Frozen Berry Mojito

Servings: 1

Ingredients

  • 1 c Fresh Berries of Choice (we used blueberries and blackberries for this batch)
  • 1/2 Lime (juiced)
  • 1 tbsp Mint Infused Simple Syrup (see recipe below)
  • 2 oz White Rum
  • 1 c Ice (if using frozen berries, you can either omit the ice or use less than a cup)
  • Sprig of Mint

Instructions

  • Combine all ingredients in a blender with the ice.
  • Blend until smooth and garnish with a sprig of mint.

Notes

Mint Infused Simple Syrup
Mix 1/2 cup water with 1/2 cup sugar in a saucepan and heat until the sugar dissolves. Then let it steep with a handful of mint leaves for an hour or so. Strain out the leaves and store in the fridge till you’re ready to use it.

Possible Variations
Change up the type of berries (strawberry, raspberry) to change the taste
Use frozen berries and slightly decrease the ice
Add more simple syrup if you like a sweeter drink or when using berries that are not as sweet

Sunset Bar and Grill, St. Maarten

Ahhh…Sunset Bar and Grill in St. Maarten. Where else can you enjoy a delicious rum punch on a beautiful beach while a 747 roars over your head?

Doesn’t sound that good to you? Well, when researching places to check out on our recent trip to St. Maarten, a good friend mentioned that we really ought to check this place out. We thought it would be a novelty and that we’d stop by just for a quick beverage, but we ended up having a blast!

The day we got there by mid-afternoon the bar was already hopping! There were plenty of people on the beach enjoying the warm sunshine and we noticed a surfboard acting as a sort of sign with a flight schedule written on it.

We ordered several Rum Punches and Mojitos along with a few appetizers.

Sunset 8 (600)

Just as our first round was being served, we saw people clamoring towards the beach. Within seconds, a huge US Airways jet blasted right past us, over the fence and landed on the runway just feet from the bar. Wow – talk about close! I grabbed my camera and headed to the sand to see if I could capture the next landing.

Sunset 6 (600)

In addition to great drinks and the jet entertainment, Sunset Bar and Grill frequently has live music and even crab races. And if you’re short on cash, women can drink free – if you’re willing to go topless.

Sunset 13 (600)

After all the airplanes have landed for the day, Sunset offers a quiet waterfront dining under the stars. So really – Sunset Bar and Grill should be on your list of beach bars to check out next time you’re in St. Maarten. Just don’t stand in the middle of the beach when a 747 takes off….

Karakter Beach Bar, St. Maarten

Ever been to a beach bar that’s a bus? A beach bar bus? As we were planning our recent trip to St. Maarten, a friend mentioned a beach bar on beautiful Simpson Bay Beach that we needed to visit. We asked the name of it and set out to find it one sunny afternoon.

We were staying on the other side of the Dutch Bridge from this bar so we took a hike down Front Street past the Dutch Bridge and turned back in to Simpson Bay Beach. The beach has gorgeous soft sand and turquoise blue water.

We stopped for a quick beverage at Mary’s Boon Resort and Spa and then wandered a short way over looking for a bar called Karakter.

Sure enough! The main part of the bar IS actually a bus and the drinks are mixed inside the bus. There are covered picnic tables, beach chairs and umbrellas in the ultra soft sand and it was a fantastic place to lime away the afternoon.

The bar is in close proximity to the airport, but the beach ambiance, beautiful sand and great drinks far outweighed the occasional roar of an airplane taking off or landing.

The Rum Punch is highly recommended – strong and fruity just like we like it.
