Raspberry & Rum Slushie

The kids are heading back to school and we know that we’ll soon be heading into (gasp!) fall – but while we can, we’re gonna hold on to the last weeks of lovely warm summer with a delicious, cold and fresh Raspberry & Rum Slushie. You can substitute strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, or a combination of berries to make use of fruit that’s fresh in your area.

Exuma Blue Lemonade

Have you ever tried an Electric Lemonade? An Exuma Blue Lemonade is similar to an Electric Lemonade except we substituted rum for the vodka and added a bit more sweet and sour mix for a slightly tarter taste. The color was so clear and blue that it reminded us of the beautiful water around Exuma, so we re-named the new rum version Exuma Blue.

Easy and really refreshing, this would be a good recipe to make in a larger batch!

Rum N’ Root Beer Float

Oh my gosh. We’ve been in love with rum and root beer since our post on Dirty Pirate Poptails. We’ve been wanting to try rum and root beer in a root beer float, and just happened to have the time (and ingredients) to try it out last weekend. Well I’m pleased (and a bit dismayed, ’cause we’ve gained a pound or two while experimenting) to announce that we’ve come up with an amazing, stellar and incredible combination for this very adult version of a Root Beer Float. Hope you enjoy it – just remember, although big on taste, it’s unfortunately not short on calories! (but who’s counting….)

Vanilla Ice Cream
Root Beer made with cane sugar
(we used Virgil’s Root Beer – Hansen’s Root Beer is also very good)
2 oz. Dark Rum
(we released the Kraken for this one)

Fill a tall glass with several healthy scoops of vanilla ice cream, pour in the dark rum and top off (slowly as it foams up) with the root beer. Kick your feet up and enjoy!!

Coconut Lemon Martini

Summertime and lemons go together like a beach and rum! Here’s an excellent rum martini recipe using a bit of lemonade and a squeeze or two of fresh lemon. Pair that with the sweetness of coconut rum and the taste kind of reminded me of those sweet and sour candies that we used to have as kids. Goes down way to smooth and will have you smacking your lips for another – but beware of tee many martooni’s!  Enjoy!

Coconut-Lemon-Martini-(600)-O

1 oz. vodka (use the good stuff for a smoother drink)
1.5 oz lemonade

Coconut Lime Freeze

Warmest day of the year so far – yippee! It’s been a long time coming this summer. Bring it on!

The welcomed warmth reminded me of a very refreshing and simple to make drink that we’ve enjoyed on several hot summer evenings called the Coconut Lime Freeze. So cold and icy – but the brainfreeze is worth it! The taste of coconut rum and lime play nicely together and may remind you of sipping a frozen tropical concoction in a hammock on your favorite beach. Enjoy!

1/2 – 3/4 c. frozen limeade concentrate

Pour rum, limeade and water into a blender over 4-5 cups of ice. Blend until creamy adding more ice if necessary. Garnish with a lime slice (or lemon as I did – ’cause I was out of lime!)

Cruzan Strawberry Rum

Cruzan Rum recently announced the launch of their newest spirit, Cruzan Strawberry. It’s the 11th spirit in their family of flavored rums, and the recipe is crafted with a touch of ginger to give a unique spin to the strawberry taste. Here are some other details:

Tasting Notes and Aroma:
•       Taste – Ripe, wild strawberry coupled with subtle ginger root
•       Aroma – Fresh and juicy strawberry
•       Finish – Smooth with a light spiced ginger finish

After reading this press release from the folks at Cruzan Rum, we’d been eagerly awaiting the arrival of the new Strawberry Rum. We’re recent fans of Cruzan Rums since our Cruzan Rum Factory Tour in St. Croix in February, and have enjoyed using the Cruzan flavored rums in many boat and beach drinks such as the Cruzan Confusion! Last week, we were lucky enough to find a bottle of the newly released Cruzan Strawberry Rum after visiting nearly every liquor store in our area.

After scoring the desired bottle, we asked our Facebook friends for recipe suggestions. In addition to some excellent suggestions from our readers, Cruzan Rum Representative, Justine, also kindly volunteered a few recipe ideas. We asked a couple of friends if they would assist us in some Strawberry Rum recipe testing this weekend, and with minimal (no) arm twisting, they obliged!

We picked two recipes to start with and began to assemble the necessary ingredients.

First on the agenda was a Strawberry Mojito using the recipe from Cruzan Rum. The recipe called for Cruzan Strawberry Rum, sugar, mint leaves, juice of half a lime, and club soda. We muddled the sugar, mint, lime juice and a splash of club soda.

We then added the rum (note the exceptional choice of shot glass!),

Then poured it over ice in a tall glass and garnished with lime and strawberry.

After a little sampling and tweaking, this is the version of the recipe that we liked best.

Strawberry Mojito
(makes two)

3 to 3.5 oz. Cruzan Strawberry Rum
2 tsp. sugar
4 mint leaves
Juice of half a lime
6 oz. plus a splash of club soda

Muddle the mint leaves, sugar, lime juice and a splash of club soda. Add the remaining club soda and stir. Pour into a tall glass over ice. Garnish with a slice of lime and a strawberry.

It seems easy to overpower the taste of the strawberry with too much mint, so we initially tried 8 leaves then reduced the amount to 4 leaves per serving. The overwhelming consensus of all 4 taste testers was that the Cruzan Strawberry Mojito was crisp, light and very refreshing – an excellent summer beverage!

To make a Skinny Strawberry Mojito: Substitute 1/2 – 1 packet (.5 – 1 gram) Stevia for the sugar and/or Sprite Zero for the club soda. Tweak the amounts until the taste is just as you like it!

Stay tuned – more Cruzan Strawberry Rum Recipes (Part 2) in tommorow’s post!
