VooDoo Juice

We’re headed to St. Thomas soon and planning a short stay at Bolongo Bay. One of the drinks listed on the menu at their beach bar, Iggie’s, is VooDoo Juice, which is described as lots of Cruzan rums, a little juice & a bucket to drink it in! Intrigued, we looked up some recipes for VooDoo Juice and found that this concoction truly is a LOT of rum and a little juice! The recipe below can be used for one tall (and VERY strong) drink or two shorter drinks.

We’ll give VooDoo Juice a try at Bolongo Bay too and let you know how they compare – bucket and all. Pretty sure it’ll taste even better just because we’ll be sitting on a beautiful beach in the warm Caribbean sunshine…

Lava Flow

Aloha! We enjoyed a Lava Flow on vacation in Hawaii a while back and loved the banana, coconut, strawberry (and rum of course!) taste. Because we add ice to the banana, coconut and pineapple mix, it makes a nice, light and frozen concoction. Close your eyes while you sip and you might even hear the palm trees rustling in the gentle Hawaiian breeze…

Lava-Flow--(600)-O
Lava Flow
(makes one)

1 oz. coconut rum
1 oz. light rum
1 small banana (or half of one large)
2 oz. pineapple juice
2 oz. coconut cream
2 oz fresh strawberries (about 2 large)
1/2 c. ice

Blend the banana, pineapple juice, coconut cream and ice in a blender until smooth and frothy and save in a glass. Slightly blend the strawberries and rums in a blender and pour in a small hurricane glass. Slowly pour the banana, pineapple and coconut cream blend on top of the strawberry and rum mix and watch as the strawberry mix swirls up into the lighter mixture looking a bit like a lava flow! Garnish with a strawberry or slice of pineapple.

Island Delight

Last weekend I ordered a delicious looking tropical concoction with rum that the bartender called an “Island Delight”. Despite attempts to get the exact recipe before leaving, he would only divulge that it contained OJ, Piña Colada Mix, Malibu Rum and Grenadine. We went back to the office and gave it a couple of “shots” and think we came up with a pretty tasty  mix.
Enjoy, ’cause after all, who couldn’t use a little Island Delight?

Bushwacker

Bushwackers’s. Oh my. I sampled my first Bushwacker atop Paradise Point in St. Thomas many, many years ago and was pretty much hooked. I mean, who wouldn’t be? Chocolate, rum and the amazing overlook of Charlotte Amalie – wow, paradise.

Our most recent tropical encounter with the Bushwacker took place at Ivan’s Stress Free Bar on White Bay, Jost Van Dyke. Not only do they make a mean Bushwacker, but they will also add a floater of rum on the top if requested. Not that you need that extra floater, mind you. A Bushwacker without the floater can knock you on your bum, because in addition to that wonderful chocolate and rum, a Bushwacker contains, vodka, Kahlua, Amaretto and Bailey’s – oh, and don’t forget a little coconut cream and a sprinkle of nutmeg! So like our recipe below aptly describes it, if you want a virgin Bushwacker – you might as well just suck on ice!

This recipe will make about 3 tall glasses depending on the amount of ice used. We like them thick and frozen, so we blend about 3 cups of ice with this recipe. Enjoy – but watch out! These might taste like a milkshake but they are potent!

Bushwacker Rum Recipe
Bushwacker
(makes 3)

2. oz Coconut Rum
2 oz. Vodka
2 Oz. Bailey’s
2 oz. Kahlua
2 oz. Amaretto
2 oz. Cream of Coconut
Chocolate Syrup
Pinch of Nutmeg

Drizzle chocolate syrup in a glass. Combine all ingredients in a blender, blend with ice, pour in the glass. Sprinkle with nutmeg.

More Cruzan Strawberry Rum

Strawberry Daiquiri

6 cups ice
1/2 cup white sugar
4 ounces frozen strawberries
1/8 cup lime juice
1/2 cup lemon juice
3/4 cup Cruzan Strawberry Rum
1/4 cup lemon lime flavored carbonated beverage

Blend in blender.

The recipe made approximately 4 tall glasses of daiquiris and although pretty darn sweet and filling – they were yummy. John later thought that we should have added a floater of Cruzan Black Strap for a little extra punch.

Last, but not least, we put aside a Strawberry Rum Lemonade recipe that included simple syrup to try another “skinny” recipe. Hey – you gotta save calories somewhere!! This is what we came up with.

Skinny Strawberry Rum Lemonade

2 oz. Cruzan Strawberry Rum
4 oz. Crystal Light Lemonade
Sliced strawberries
4 to 6 blueberries

Mix Cruzan Strawberry Rum with the Crystal Light Lemonade. Stir in sliced strawberries and blueberries. Pour over ice.
The result was refreshing and light with a nice blend of strawberry and lemon. And who knows, with all that fruit, it might even be good for you!

Cruzan Strawberry Rum

Cruzan Rum recently announced the launch of their newest spirit, Cruzan Strawberry. It’s the 11th spirit in their family of flavored rums, and the recipe is crafted with a touch of ginger to give a unique spin to the strawberry taste. Here are some other details:

Tasting Notes and Aroma:
•       Taste – Ripe, wild strawberry coupled with subtle ginger root
•       Aroma – Fresh and juicy strawberry
•       Finish – Smooth with a light spiced ginger finish

After reading this press release from the folks at Cruzan Rum, we’d been eagerly awaiting the arrival of the new Strawberry Rum. We’re recent fans of Cruzan Rums since our Cruzan Rum Factory Tour in St. Croix in February, and have enjoyed using the Cruzan flavored rums in many boat and beach drinks such as the Cruzan Confusion! Last week, we were lucky enough to find a bottle of the newly released Cruzan Strawberry Rum after visiting nearly every liquor store in our area.

After scoring the desired bottle, we asked our Facebook friends for recipe suggestions. In addition to some excellent suggestions from our readers, Cruzan Rum Representative, Justine, also kindly volunteered a few recipe ideas. We asked a couple of friends if they would assist us in some Strawberry Rum recipe testing this weekend, and with minimal (no) arm twisting, they obliged!

We picked two recipes to start with and began to assemble the necessary ingredients.

First on the agenda was a Strawberry Mojito using the recipe from Cruzan Rum. The recipe called for Cruzan Strawberry Rum, sugar, mint leaves, juice of half a lime, and club soda. We muddled the sugar, mint, lime juice and a splash of club soda.

We then added the rum (note the exceptional choice of shot glass!),

Then poured it over ice in a tall glass and garnished with lime and strawberry.

After a little sampling and tweaking, this is the version of the recipe that we liked best.

Strawberry Mojito
(makes two)

3 to 3.5 oz. Cruzan Strawberry Rum
2 tsp. sugar
4 mint leaves
Juice of half a lime
6 oz. plus a splash of club soda

Muddle the mint leaves, sugar, lime juice and a splash of club soda. Add the remaining club soda and stir. Pour into a tall glass over ice. Garnish with a slice of lime and a strawberry.

It seems easy to overpower the taste of the strawberry with too much mint, so we initially tried 8 leaves then reduced the amount to 4 leaves per serving. The overwhelming consensus of all 4 taste testers was that the Cruzan Strawberry Mojito was crisp, light and very refreshing – an excellent summer beverage!

To make a Skinny Strawberry Mojito: Substitute 1/2 – 1 packet (.5 – 1 gram) Stevia for the sugar and/or Sprite Zero for the club soda. Tweak the amounts until the taste is just as you like it!

Stay tuned – more Cruzan Strawberry Rum Recipes (Part 2) in tommorow’s post!

Frozen Rum Runners

Yum. As summer approaches my mind drifts to frozen concoctions and enjoying the warm sunshine with a frosty glass in hand. One of my favorite frozen concoctions happens to be a Rum Runner. Kind of like an icee with a really good kick!

Everyone seems to have a little different recipe for Rum Runners and I’ve only sampled one that I didn’t care for (I think it may have been a really cheap rum). We’ve sampled them frozen and on the rocks. Some have a reddish hue and some (like the picture below) are more orange in color. Regardless, sipping one of these may make your mind take a short vacation to a place with a hammock swaying in a tropical breeze on the coast of somewhere beautiful….

Nilla Killa

Visiting White Bay on Jost Van Dyke for the first time was a trip. Our boat pulled up to this incredibly beyond believable gorgeous white crescent of sand as we “rapped” I’m on the Boat (very badly I admit).

As we anchored, Captain Darrel told us that we should visit Soggy Dollar Bar and order a “Nilla Killa”. Don’t think we even asked what was in it – it sounded good. “Wicked good” said Darrel. Darrel asked if we wanted to dinghy in. Dinghy in???? This is the home of the Soggy Dollar Bar – we had to swim in with our soggy dollars to get the full effect – right?

Anyway – great day, great drink. Soggy Dollar’s Nilla Killa recipe is TOP secret according to Mic – the bartender, so of course we set out to re-create it as closely as we could remember it when we got home. You can let us know what you think. If only it came with that incredible view! Enjoy!
