The Cruzan Confusion

While spending a week in St Croix, we were introduced to a rum drink called the Cruzan Confusion. Our wonderful bartender, Dave, at the Divi Carina Resort in St Croix gave us his secret recipe for this wonderful and oh-so-powerful concoction, but we thought we’d check the internet to see if there was another recipe posted. We found a number of sites with the following Cruzan Confusion recipe, and I’ve included Dave’s, for comparison at the end. Let the confusion commence!!

Cruzan Rum Factory Tour

We just returned from enjoying a week of Rum Therapy in St. Croix. We’d never been to St. Croix before, so there were many things we wanted to check out. One of the top things on our list was a tour of the Cruzan Rum Factory.

Finding the Cruzan Rum Factory was an adventure in itself. For those of you who have been on St. Croix, you may know that there aren’t a ton of signs directing you to different sites, and the map didn’t show many of the small roads. We probably could have purchased a more detailed map somewhere, but how lost could we get on an island????….

Anyway, we headed to the west end of the island. John was driving, ’cause they drive on the left side and I volunteered to navigate. He may have ended up with the best end of the deal! We turned on 64 as the map indicated, only to find that 64 was actually a loop and we needed to be clear on the other side of that loop. Finally figuring it out, we saw the factory through the foliage. As we turned in, we could smell a wonderfully sweet aroma…molasses!

Cruzan 1
We found our way to the building where the tour started and anxiously awaited our guide. Tours at the Cruzan Rum Factory are $5.00 per adult and run continuously from 9:00-11:30a.m. and 1:00-4:15p.m.

Turns out, our tour guide was Karen Nelthropp Low, a member of the Nelthropp Family that has produced Cruzan Rum for 7 generations on St. Croix. She certainly knew her stuff and eagerly answered all of our questions and then some.

St. Croix used to produce quite a bit of sugar cane until the 1960’s and up to that point the Cruzan Distillery used mainly molasses made from local sugar cane. Now a high end molasses from Guatemala is shipped into the local port daily and then delivered by trucks to the distillery.

Cruzan 2
We began the tour by walking past enormous vats of molasses, tropical rain water and yeast fermenting. It is quite the active process with lots of bubbling and gurgling occurring. The aroma was strong and sweet and it was tempting to just stick your finger in to give it a taste.

Cruzan 3
When the bubbling and gurgling stop, the molasses has fermented and is ready for the next step.

Cruzan 4
Karen told us the the Nelthropp family and staff sit down daily to test rum in various stages of production to ensure the quality of the product. Wonder if they’re hiring?

We also learned that Cruzan takes extra time and care to remove the fusels (heads and tails as she explained it) from the rum during distillation. The fusel oil is an impurity that can cause a slightly antiseptic smell and taste and can contribute to hangovers! We inadvertently tested this statement several times during this trip and must say – they may have something here!

Cruzan 5
The way in which a rum’s age is calculated was a bit confusing, but I found it quite interesting that Cruzan uses one-time use bourbon barrels from Jim Beam Bourbon Distillery to age their rums.

Cruzan 6
After appropriately aging, the rum is removed from the barrel by tapping out the cork and emptying the rum and allowing it to flow from a cistern to a holding tank.

Cruzan 7
The rum is sent to Florida to be bottled. Cruzan used to bottle its rums in St. Croix, but due to the increase in demand for their rum, they needed to move that part of the process off island.

The tour concludes with a rum tasting and a cocktail of your choice! We had a good time and learned a bit about rum manufacturing. The tour is well worth it if you get to St. Croix someday! Cruzan Rum website: http://cruzanrum.com/

The Equator Shooter

I haven’t been able to concentrate very well lately – my mind keeps wandering to an island in the sun. In fact, in just a few days my toes will be happily wiggling in some warm sand. As we head in the direction of the equator we will celebrate the beginning of a tropical holiday with one (or possible two!) of these yummy concoctions. Maybe you would like one too?

The Equator Shooter

1/2 oz peach schnapps
1/2 oz white rum
Grenadine syrup

Layer ingredients in the exact order. Grenadine should sit on top for a little bit before sliding down the inside of the shot glass.

Chocolate Rum Balls

Rum Balls are a pretty popular holiday treat. Thanks to our niece, Christie, for sharing her recipe for Chocolate Rum Balls – yummmm… To make Coconut Chocolate Rum Balls, substitute Coconut Rum for the dark rum.

Chocolate Rum Balls

½ cup (1 stick) of butter, softened
1/3 cup granulated sugar
1 egg yolk
1 tablespoon dark rum
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 cup all purpose flour
¼ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1 cup finely chopped walnuts or pecans
Powdered sugar

Combine butter, granulated sugar and egg yolk in large bowl; beat until light and fluffy.  Add rum and vanilla; mix well.  Add flour and cocoa; stir until well blended.  Stir in nuts.  Cover; refrigerate 1 hour or until firm.

Preheat oven to 350ºF.  Lightly grease cookie sheets or line with parchment paper.  Shape dough into 1-inch balls; place 2 inches apart on prepared cookie sheets.  Bake 15-20 minutes or until firm.  Transfer to wire racks; cool 5 minutes.  Roll warm cookies in powdered sugar.  Cool completely on wire racks.

Smallest Bar in Key West

Duval Street in Key West is on the to do list for most Key West vacationers. The street is lined with bars, live music, restaurants and shops and is a great place to pull up a bar seat and do some people watching. One popular activity for some visitors is the Duval Crawl, or bar-hopping on Duval Street. Upon inquiry, we were told that this means trying to visit as many Key West bars in one night as you can handle!

We were in Key West for several nights, so we took our time and sampled some of the best known bars while keeping our eyes open for the smaller, lesser known bars.

One very small, but not necessarily lesser known bar that we enjoyed was the Smallest Bar in Key West. Yes, that’s the name and for good reason. The bar is – at the most – 8 feet wide, has about 4 barstools, the bar and the bartender. Don’t come here looking for much more than a frosty beer, but do stop by if you want to enjoy some conversation with some instant friends! Everyone in the bar beckoned passer-bys to come in and instantly started up a conversation with whomever ventured in. We only hung around for about 20 minutes, but really enjoyed our time at the Smallest Bar in Key West.

Making Vanilla Rum

Vanilla rum is not always easy to find and is an absolute necessity when concocting a batch of yummy Rum Therapy “Nilla Killas“. I recently ran across several recipes to make your own vanilla rum – well actually you aren’t making the rum – just flavoring it with vanilla! It apparently takes a while for the full flavoring to occur, so I may start testing the process this weekend. Hope I can wait a full month to try it!

Nilla Killa

Visiting White Bay on Jost Van Dyke for the first time was a trip. Our boat pulled up to this incredibly beyond believable gorgeous white crescent of sand as we “rapped” I’m on the Boat (very badly I admit).

As we anchored, Captain Darrel told us that we should visit Soggy Dollar Bar and order a “Nilla Killa”. Don’t think we even asked what was in it – it sounded good. “Wicked good” said Darrel. Darrel asked if we wanted to dinghy in. Dinghy in???? This is the home of the Soggy Dollar Bar – we had to swim in with our soggy dollars to get the full effect – right?

Anyway – great day, great drink. Soggy Dollar’s Nilla Killa recipe is TOP secret according to Mic – the bartender at Soggy at the time, so of course we set out to re-create when we got home (although it’s basically a Painkiller with vanilla rum). If only it came with that incredible view! Enjoy!
