Tree Limin’ Extreme – Ziplining in St. Thomas

We arrived early on a Monday morning at Tree Limin’ Extreme to try out their zipline experience, currently listed as the #1 Outdoor Activity in St. Thomas on Trip Advisor. Thinking the skies would be clearest and the photo ops the best first thing in the morning, we requested an early time slot. Since we had a rental car the week we were in St. Thomas and were staying on the south side of the island, we left pretty early for our 8:20 am requested time of arrival.

This was not our first time ziplining; we’d ziplined once in Kauai and once in Jamaica, and even though we were not new to this type of experience, we were still  just a tad bit apprehensive.

Once we got there, we checked in and were greeted by our guides for the day – Kyle and Leon.

Both super friendly, they immediately drew us in with their gregarious personalities.

Our group of 7 had a lot of questions, and they took the time to make sure everyone felt at ease as we got strapped in for our ride high atop St. Thomas.

Don’t forget to rub the lucky coconut!

We all rubbed the lucky coconut to ensure our safe return, then made our way up to the Pinzgauer, the rugged vehicle that took us up the steep embankment to the first line.

Once at the top, Leon and Kyle gave us our instructions, a safety briefing and one last chance to change our mind about the whole thing. No one chickened out, and although the adrenaline was pumping, we all climbed the steps to the first zip.

Our Zipline Experience Video
(if you don’t have your own Go Pro, you can rent one at the desk to film your own experience!)

There are 6 ziplines and 2 sky bridges (suspension bridges) on the course as well as absolutely stunning views of Magens Bay and the islands surrounding St. Thomas.

Sky Bridge #1

The ziplines take you through the dense jungle where we spotted quite a few iguanas hanging out in the trees and enjoyed the serenade of coki frogs and tropical birds.

Each line is different, and our guides would give us tips on getting the most out of each one. Both Leon and Kyle (ok, mostly Leon) encouraged us to scream like crazy as we were zipping to scare the zippers behind us, and some of us (we won’t name names here) had no problem complying, whether it was voluntary or not…

The views were amazing everywhere we looked and we enjoyed reading the island information printed on the signs on each platform.

We got to the last line way too soon. Even though the tour takes between 2 – 2.5 hours, we were having such a great time that the time just “zipped” by.

Sky Bridge #2

A rainbow over our last zipline

The last line was interesting. It was preceded by the second and highest sky bridge. The drop looked to be the greatest of the 6 and this one didn’t end on a regular platform at the end. Once we stepped off the platform, we flew quickly down through the jungle and then yo-yoed back and forth a few times before being guided down a platform ladder in the middle of the line.

The last zipline

We watched from below as the rest of our party came in for a landing, then headed down the path with visions of the fun experience still fresh on our minds.

What did we like best about our Tree Limin’ Adventure? Our guides were great and made us feel extremely safe and comfortable – even while hurling ourselves off a platform into the trees! They followed the safety procedures to a “T”, and took the time to answer any questions our group had. The views were spectacular and may have been worth the price of admission alone. And the best part of it all was just the chance to enjoy the beauty of St. Thomas while experiencing an adrenaline rush through the lush tropics of the island…

Zipline and Boblsed Ride at Mystic Mountain, Jamaica

Arriving at the top of Mystic Mountain, Jamaica via the Skyride, we noticed that there was a more to experience than just the zipline and the bobsled ride…

But before checking the other attractions, we headed straight for the zipline!

After getting geared up, we headed down the path towards the first platform.

The zipline at Mystic Mountain offers:

  • Seven platforms
  • Six Zip lines averaging nearly 100 meters in length
  • One 10-meter vertical rappel descent
  • One 25-meter suspension walking bridge

The first 5 lines were a ton of fun! Our guides were great – very attentive and hilarious. Once we got to the 6th platform, we couldn’t locate the next line. Our guide told us that this was where we would be taking a vertical descent – a nicer way of saying a longggggg drop! Most were a little nervous about the drop, but it ended up being easier than it looked.

Next obstacle – the suspension bridge. A long bridge with a little play led to a little more nervous laughter and the final zip.

The last zip was the best with a fantastic view of the ocean.

Next stop – the Jamaican Bobsled.

An exhilarating ride through the rainforest! The only problem? It was over too soon!

Before heading back down on the Skyride, we headed to Mystic Dining to enjoy some refreshment and the amazing view of the port at Ocho Rios.

Mystic Mountain, Ocho Rios, Jamaica

The thought of zipping through the jungle on a Jamaican Bobsled hooked us into booking an excursion at Mystic Mountain near Ocho Rios during our recent trip to Jamaica. Apparently inspired by the movie Cool Runnings, Mystic Mountain offers not only a ride that hurtles you down the mountain in bobsled shaped cars, but a zipline, swimming pool with slide and a restaurant that offers a terrific view of Ocho Rios below.

We opted for the “Tranopy” ticket which covered the cost of the skyride through the jungle to get to the top, the zipline adventure and one ride on the bobsled.

Just past the ticket office, we boarded the skyride for a scenic 15 minute ride up the mountain.

Slow and smooth, the skyride gives an excellent view of lush foliage and as it moves higher, the cruise ship port of Ocho Rios.

After a relaxing, sunny and scenic ride, we reached the top, got off the skyride and made our way to our next attraction – a zipline through the jungle!

Ziplining in Paradise

I’m not a fan of heights, Actually, heights probably don’t bother me as much as the fear of falling – off of something high. So, I really didn’t know what to think when asked if I wanted to go on a zipline during a trip to Kauai. I was assured that falling really wasn’t an issue and that we would be strapped in quite well. After all, they said – how many chances would I have to zip through the lush tropics of Kauai?

There were two options for ziplining in Kauai and we chose Kauai Backcountry Adventure simply because it was recommended by a friend who had recently ziplined with them. We set up a tour time for the following day.

To say I was nervous as we drove to the Kauai Backcountry office that day would be an extreme understatement. It was a beautiful day and I should have been looking at the lush foliage and beautiful scenery as we drove with the top off of our rental jeep, but all I could think of was whether I could actually allow myself to hurtle down the mountain on a thin cable.

We checked in and I immediately felt a little better. The staff was wonderful and our guide, who must have sensed my fear, was funny and very reassuring. We signed the obligatory forms, got strapped into our gear and took a very bumpy four wheel drive up to the ziplines.

The Kauai Backcountry Adventure Zipline Tour begins at a point with an astounding view of Mt. Waialeale – one of the rainiest spots on earth with an average 426 inches of rain a year. All of that rain makes it one of the greenest and most vegetated places I’ve seen.

We took in the beauty of the area for a few moments and then saw this:

My irrational fear kicked into high gear and I thought “I’m not walking off of that platform!!!” Fortunately, the platform we started on was not near as high or steep. I watched as several brave souls went before me and then it was my turn. As I looked down, I second guessed my choice of clothing that morning. Wouldn’t bright neon colors be easier to find it I somehow plunged into the foliage?

My heart pounding in my throat, I stepped off the platform and zipped down the cable towards the next platform, screaming loudly the whole way! I had the presence of mind to keep my feet up and landed squarely on the platform. Realizing I had lived through it, I took a deep breath. That wasn’t bad at all!

During subsequent zips ( I believe there were seven cables in all) I even relaxed enough to look around and see the incredible beauty around me. Rivers, lush plants and trees and that beautiful mountain. Wow- what a ride…

Ziplining has become quite popular and is now available in other tropical locations such as Antigua, Dominica, St. Kitts, St. Lucia, Roatan and St. Martin. Hmmm…I actually liked it so much that I might even be convinced to try it again on an upcoming trip to St. Martin. Think I’ll wear some neon colors though – just in case…
